I've been a member of this group since my fiance and I purchased a
2005 Salsa Red Prius last June. So far, I've only read the postings,
never contributing to myself. We had an experience yesterday worth
sharing though...
We live pretty close to downtown Houston as I am a research scientist
at Rice and my fiance works downtown. While the mandatory evacuation
zone was 25 miles away, it looked like the eye of Rita was headed for
Houston as of Wednesday night, so my fiance and I decided to head for
Austin where we could crash at a friend's place. We started from
downtown with a full tank at 4 am, drove 190 miles, and arrived in
Austin at 8 pm, yes 16 hours (normally a 3 hour journey). The Prius
was on the whole time with the exception of a half hour break at 4 pm,
so it ran continuously for 12 hours. As we sat in bumper-bumper
traffic on I-10 for an eternity, the battery kept the AC and the radio
going, and once the bars turned pink/magenta, the ICE kicked on for a
little bit, and it repeated that for a while. I still had half a tank
left when we arrived in Austin. Our mpg number was 36 mpg for very
inefficient driving most of that 16 hours. We saw hundreds of people
stranded without gas. While we had felt confident with our Prius
purchase, we are now thankful. We're also thankful that Rita is a CAT
3 hurricane and won't hit Houston directly, but we're keeping the
cities of Beaumont and Port Arthur in our hearts and minds.

Viviamo abbastanza vicini dal centro di Houston dato che sono uno scinziato di ricerca a Rice e mia ragazza lavora in centro. Mentre la zona d'evacuazione era a 40 km da qui, sembrava che l'occhio di Rita era diretta per Houston già da mercoledì sera, quindi abbiamo deciso di andare ad Austin a ripararci da un amico. Siamo partiti dalla città col serbatoio pieno alle 4 del mattino, guidato per 300 Km e siamo arrivato ad Austin alle 8 di sera, si, 16 ore (normalmente sono tre ore di viaggio). La Prius era accesa tutto il tempo con l'eccezione di una pausa alle 4 del pomeriggio per mezz'ora, quindi, ha girato continuamente per 12 ore. Mentre eravamo incastrati paraurti contro paraurti sulla I-10 per una eternità , la batteria ha mantenuto l'aria condizionata e la radio funzionante, e una volta che le barre erano rosa (ndr batterie scariche) il motore termico si accende per un pochettino, e lo ripeteva ogni tanto. Avevo ancora mezzo serbatoio una volta arrivati ad Austin. I Km/l era sui 15 per via della guida molto inefficente nella maggior parte delle 16 ore. Abbiamo visto centinaia di persone ferme senza benzina. Mentre eravamo confidenti dell'acquisto di una prius ora ne siamo riconoscenti. Ringraziamo anche Rita che è scesa a categioria 3 ed eviterà Houston, ma teniamo le città di beaumont e Port Arthur nei nostri pensieri.
